Okinawa Izakaya Kanemaru

The roots of Awamori actually trace back to Thailand.
About 600 years ago, in the 15th century, Okinawa, Japan, and Thailand were connected through trade despite walking different historical paths.

At that time, Okinawa flourished as the Ryukyu Kingdom, unified in 1429 by Sho Hashi. It developed as a “maritime intermediary kingdom,” engaging in trade with Southeast Asia based on diplomatic relations with China.

It is said that through trade, long-grain rice and distillation techniques were brought from Thailand, leading to the creation of the prototype of Awamori.

Meanwhile, Japan was during the Muromachi period. Political power weakened during the time of Ashikaga Yoshimasa, heading towards an unstable time of war. Overseas exchanges were limited, and the Ryukyu Islands played a significant role in connecting Japan with the outside world.

In Thailand, the Ayutthaya Kingdom prospered and developed significantly as an international trading nation. Culture that would become the roots of Awamori was transmitted through exchanges with Ryukyu.

Awamori is not just a traditional Okinawan liquor; it is a drink that emerged from the fusion of Thai culture through Ryukyu’s trade. While preserving that culture, modern Awamori continues to evolve, creating new aromas and flavors.

At “Okinawa Shubo Kanemaru,” enjoy a special Awamori experience woven through history and culture connecting Thailand and Okinawa.

The shop is located between Sukhumvit 69 and 71 on Soi Pridi 3 (commonly known as PD Soi 3).

REVIEW

Okinawa Shubo Kanemaru opened on April 3. It is located at the site of Bokkē.
Rest assured, customers of Bokkē! Popular menu items have been carried over.

As a specialty shop where you can enjoy Okinawan Awamori, it has gained even more appeal! With popular Izakaya dishes like Fresh Bluefin Tuna Sashimi, Crispy Cheese Mille-feuille Tonkatsu, Juicy Grilled Beef Skirt Steak Skewers with Refreshing Oroshi Ponzu, and Negitoro Rolls. Okinawan cuisine is also featured with familiar staple dishes. Personally, I, being a fan of Somen, enjoyed Kanemaru’s Somen, so I appreciated the Somen Chanpuru without tofu! (^^)

While Awamori may have an image of being an old liquor, many new brands have emerged that have evolved with modern times, offering rich aromas and flavors. Please explore and enjoy the unknown history and evolution!

Knowing that the roots of Awamori are in Thailand has expanded the deliciousness even further! Enjoy the fusion of Ryukyu and Thai cultures.
